Planning a Holiday Getaway

Are you the type of person who likes to get away during the holiday season? If so, we at KKB, your Denver CPA firm, have put together our list of favorite places to go during the holidays. Some are close to home. Some are city. And some are tropical. So, hopefully we have included someplace that appeals to you. But, book your plans soon as airline tickets and hotel rooms can fill fast!

New York City

There is no place like New York City in the world. And, when the city is aglow during the holidays, the place is downright magical. From the official holiday season kick-off of the famous Thanksgiving Day Parade to the Rockefeller Center Ice Rink and Christmas tree, New York is a great spectacle that is not to be missed. Among the great traditions is at Radio City with the Rockettes’ Christmas spectacular, not to mention the countless Broadway shows that are running. Even Grand Central station gets into the holiday act with their Holiday Laser Light Shows. Window shopping is also an event as storefronts do up their displays in grand fashion, especially along the famed Fifth Avenue.

Zurich, Switzerland

A compact and alpine city, Zurich turns on their display of 12,000 crystal lights starting mid-November. While there, grab a heissi schoggi (hot chocolate) and explore the galleries on Rämistrasse. Also, be sure to take in the Conelli Christmas Circus, or listen to a holiday concert in the Romanesque-style Grossmünster church. If you want to see something really special, on the eve of December 19, children set candles afloat on the Limmat River making it look ablaze in fantastic light!

Quebec City

For those of you craving European-style and charm without the long trip over the Atlantic, we suggest Quebec City. This 400-year-old walled city has European charm with lit-up cobblestone streets and 16th- and 17th-century stone homes. Plus, there is usually a good amount of snow and a great deal of local good cheer and excellent French cuisine.

Key West, FL

We know that there are some of you that just want warm breezes and sand. Key West could be right up your alley! Even at Christmas-time, you can work on your tan on the warm beaches. For festive cheer, they light up the historic inns and palm trees. The historic waterfront features blocks of boats all decorated and adorned with lights in what is called “Bright Before Christmas”.

Durango, CO

If you are seeking Aspen charm without Aspen pricing, Durango is a great place. In the southwest corner of our state, you can have horse-drawn sleigh rides and hit the slopes for great skiing in the breathtaking San Juan Mountains. Old-style holiday is the name of the game in this mountain town. Plus, you can explore Pueblo dwellings or curl up with a rum toddy in a Western saloon. If you go, check out Ken and Sue’s bistro and their pork loin medallions wrapped in Applewood bacon!
