Perdido Key Remains Beautiful and Resilient

Perdido Key - A Beautiful Florida Beach

October is the time of migration for the Monarch butterflies that flock to the white sand beaches of Perdido Key Florida.  Under the brilliant, clear blue sky, the pure white quartz sand provides a fine backdrop for a quick photo.
During an early morning walk down Johnson’s Beach, on the east end of Perdido, we were thrilled to see many animals that are enjoying life after the BP oil spill.  There are occasional traces of light brown stain on the beach, and the largest natural self-cleansing body of water in the world continues to clear itself, even in spite of that we saw -- dolphins, sting rays, the omnipresent gulls, crabs and blue herons.

New additions on the beach are the BP Sand Sharks – big equipment that digs, rotates and sifts the sand leaving it soft and pure white.  And, the newest local question is “How far down must the oil be cleared in order to preserve the environment?”

As for the two of us, we simply enjoyed planting bare feet on the sandy shore and taking in deep breaths of salty, oxygen-laden air.  Warm sun and a perfect 82 degrees completed the perfect picture of relaxation in this peaceful place.  We discovered this beautiful area in 2004, and welcome rare opportunities to return, relax and melt away the stress.

Along with the beauty of nature are plenty of opportunities for fun and our favorite restaurants and hangouts – Peg Leg Petes, the Florabama, and the Crab Shack.  Celebrations and festivals abound in this part of the panhandle, and the people are wonderful!  We highly recommend Perdido Key as a terrific vacation area!
